Students' Grants and Loans

Danish students and some foreign citizens are entitled to public support for their further education, regardless of social standing.

Students' Grants and Loans

Support for students' living costs is awarded by the State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme (Danish acronym: "SU" and "SU-lån"), a system managed by the Danish Agency for Institutions and Educational Grants (Styrelsen for Institutioner og Uddannelsesstøtte) in collaboration with the educational institutions and under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science (Uddannelses- og Forskningsministeriet).

There are two main support programs:

  • For people over 18 following a youth education program, i.e. a general upper secondary education or a vocational education and training program.
  • For students enrolled in higher education courses.

If you are a foreign citizen, you can be granted equal status according to Danish rules or EU law and apply for the state educational grant for a study program in Denmark.

There are different rules according to which you may apply for equal status with Danish citizens, so that you can receive the state educational grant, and there are different conditions you must fulfil, depending on the rules under which you apply for equal status.
