The Randers Week is held to showcase and celebrate the city and its citizens with concerts, shows, and events for the whole family, covering every age group and genre.
It is the citizens, associations, and cultural actors who stand behind the hundreds of events. The idea is that it is a party we share, and everyone is welcome to participate in big as well as small events and activities. The Randers Week has no overall theme, but music, theater, arts, and sport contribute with most events.
The Randers Week events take place all over the city. There are several tents hosting all kinds of musicians - both well-known and upcoming - and the theatre's are holding events for children and families. The street Østervold is host to all manner of buskers and performers as well as stands brimming with different types of foods. Many places in Randers offer some manner of entertainment, for example the library, Sct. Mortens Kirke and Randers Harbour.
The many experiences give attendees an opportunity to relax and have some fun while enjoying the charm and hygge that Randers has to offer.
The first Randers Week took place in 1977 at the same time as Randers celebrated its 675th anniversary as a market town.
The Randers Week always takes place in week 33, and it is no coincidence; according to the farmer Lotte Andersen, The Clerk of the Weather is usually in a good mood in that particular week, and good weather is important as there are many outdoor activities during the Randers Week.
Citizen of the year
Since 1977, Randers municipality has awarded the honour “Årets Randersborger” (Randers citizen of the year) to a person who has made a special effort for Randers. The Randers citizen of the year receives his/her award during the Randers Week.
The definition of the Randers citizen of the year is "a person who has helped to create positive publicity and initiate the development of Randers both externally and internally". It could be within areas such as business, sport, culture, youth, elderly, music, urban development, or other.
Everyone can nominate a candidate for the award. The Randers Citizen Committee assesses all the proposed candidates. The committee consists of five city council members, representatives of VisitRanders, Business Randers (Erhverv Randers), Kulturelt Samvirke (Cultural Cooperation), and Samvirkende Idrætsklubber I Randers - SIKR (Cooperative Sports Clubs in Randers).
